I recently finished reading Ballad of Never After by Stephanie Garber. This is book #2 in the Once Upon a Broken Heart series.
*POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT* Rating: 4/5 stars
"Not every love is meant to be.
After Jacks, the Prince of Hearts, betrays her, Evangeline Fox swears she'll never trust him again. Now that she’s discovered her own magic, Evangeline believes she can use it to restore the chance at happily ever after that Jacks stole away.
But when a new terrifying curse is revealed, Evangeline finds herself entering into a tenuous partnership with the Prince of Hearts again. Only this time, the rules have changed. Jacks isn’t the only force Evangeline needs to be wary of. In fact, he might be the only one she can trust, despite her desire to despise him.
Instead of a love spell wreaking havoc on Evangeline’s life, a murderous spell has been cast. To break it, Evangeline and Jacks will have to do battle with old friends, new foes, and a magic that plays with heads and hearts. Evangeline has always trusted her heart, but this time she’s not sure she can..."
This was a really great sequel! I do think I liked the first book a little bit more but this one set up for what will hopefully be a really exciting third novel in the series!
I still really love Stephanie Garber’s writing, she captures the feeling of a fairytale so well. This book was so transportive and atmospheric. The magic just jumps off the page.
Evangeline was again a little frustrating as the main character. I felt this way during the first book too. She’s just a little too naive sometimes. The return of a character from OUABH happened pretty early on in the book and it was so completely obvious what was happening and she just never caught on.
There was some romance but I wanted more!! I’m starving for more Jacks and Evangeline content. I really really hope they end up together. This book had some great moments between the two of them and the sacrifice Jacks made for her was just so good. I think it showed that he’s moved on from his past a bit.
The ending…I have no idea what’s going to happen in the next book but I can’t wait to read it!
Check out Ballad of Never After, and fall into the fairytale nightmare that seems to follow Evangeline.
Happy Reading :)
